Our history. rock steady.
Our tradition of providing the finest in natural stone products and customer service goes back nearly a half-century. In 1961, Leon Shelburne established Shelburne Marble & Stone at our original Monroeville Road location. Thirty-seven years later in 1998, we moved approximately three miles into our current location in Hoagland, Indiana. Initially, Leon sold marble, stone, and brick to area contractors. By the late 1970s, however, a market emerged for natural stone as surfaces and decorative furnishings in homes and businesses, and marble became a big part of Leon’s business. He found himself busy installing windowsills, fireplace hearths, and facings in new homes. He also performed custom work for antique dealers.
It was also during that period that Mike Sorg, still just a high-schooler, began working at Shelburne Marble & Stone. Young Mike really liked the creative, hands-on aspects of working with stone. After graduating from high school, Mike went to college to study management. But he never forgot how much he enjoyed the stone business.
Mike returned to the Hoagland area after college, and in 1985, he bought Shelburne Marble & Stone and renamed it Classic Marble & Stone. At the outset, Mike worked alone in the 2,000-square-foot building, but as demand grew, so did the company.
Mike now combines his expertise in management and natural stone to lead a full staff of professionals in sales, administration, and stone artisanship. And after two expansions, Classic Marble & Stone now operates in a nearly 30,000-square-foot space.
